Adventures in Permaculture: Day 12

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 14, 2011Leave a comment

You may notice that I skipped a day… Day 11 was just more of the same with nothing much of interest to report.  It was Larry’s last day of teaching, and we will miss him.  He’s an incredibly thoughtful individual and has a very “live and let live” attitude.  He spent a lot of time…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 10

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 11, 2011Leave a comment

What can I say about today?  Today felt like that day in medical school where they finally bring out the cadavers to see who’s really cut out for a career in medicine.  And by that I mean that we were taken to a very unappealing place where people practice permaculture.  Out of respect, I won’t…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 9

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 10, 2011Leave a comment

I am totally exhausted today.  The bags under my eyes are a delightful indication of how I will look 10 years from now. Today we broke into the groups in which we will do our projects.  My project group is doing a report on starting a permaculture design business.  The other group: designing a permaculture…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 8

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 9, 2011Leave a comment

Well, I did sleep better last night with Shannon’s camp pad… I still ache quite a bit but in an entirely different way!  Ibuprofin was my friend this morning.  As promised, below is a photo of the women’s sleeping area.  What you see is the main area with two futons.  On the sides, in the…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 7

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 8, 2011Leave a comment

Nothing of much consequence happened today, other than the collective daydreaming of my coursemates and I about the various foods and beverages we wished we were eating.  I know I will be making several more trips to the organic coffee stand while I’m here. It was 35 degrees when we woke up yesterday, and I…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 6

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 7, 2011Leave a comment

I left Portland at around 7:00 a.m. and needed to arrive at the course site for our 9:30 a.m. morning circle.  I made very good time despite the rain.  The one thing I remember from the ride is the billboard for cage fighting.  Unbelievable! I was barely 15 minutes outside Eugene when the fuel light…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 5

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 7, 20112 Comments

Another restless night on the futon.  I even had someone take the frame out from under the futon mattress.  Apparently I am just universally unable to sleep on futons – at least the old, thin mattresses.  When one hip succumbed to excruciating pain, I switched to the other one.  This continued every few hours throughout…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 4

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 5, 2011Leave a comment

I slept barely a wink last night. Obviously last night’s restful sleep on the futon was a fluke. I could feel every board and every separation as I continually adjusted my aching joints from position to position. I was in the kitchen around 7:05 a.m. as part of the cooking crew. Brett, Helen and I…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 3

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 4, 20111 Comment

Well, I feel a lot better this morning than I thought I would.  Not sure how that happened. It’s freezing here, so I joined the group of folks in the kitchen this morning waiting for hot water for tea.  I had a few cups throughout the morning. Breakfast was hot oatmeal with apples, raisins, brown…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 2

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 3, 2011Leave a comment

I would’ve made this entry last night, but I was too damned tired!  Did I mention 13.5 hour days?  I wasn’t joking. I drove my trusty rental car (which was thankfully a Hyundai Elantra and not a Jeep Commander, which is what I got last time I reserved a compact car) the 10 minutes to…

Today's escape from capitalism into nature. Not as Today's escape from capitalism into nature. Not as much wildlife as my other paddles, but we did see many pelicans and glimpses of a manatee.Take time to spend in nature. It's calming and grounds us. Nature is real life. Computers, smartphones, AI, and the stock market are things we made up. The world would be fine without them. Pelicans would still exist.#naturegirl🌻 #naturegirl #nature #gooutsideandplay #outdoorsgirl #outdoors #kayaking #kayakingadventures #paddling #kayaking #kayakadventures #fightcapitalism
The existence of billionaires and their level of c The existence of billionaires and their level of control over our lives and our government is detrimental to everyone on the planet. There are no good billionaires. They are all driven by profit motive above all else... otherwise they wouldn't be billionaires. We need to give billionaires less of our money, support small businesses when possible, and demand our government stop making laws for billionaires that hurt everyone else (because they take money away from programs for our working class and most vulnerable citizens). Why are billionaires allowed to pay starvation wages in the richest country in the world? Our government's priorities are messed up. We need to fight back.#capitalism #capitalismkills #defundbillionaires #billionaires
This is my cat's new catnip toy (made by @feliniou This is my cat's new catnip toy (made by @felinious_).Capitalism and fascism are directly related. When you let capitalism run out of control (like we have), fascism grows (like it has and is).We will never tame fascism until we tame capitalism. Period. It's not possible. We need to relentlessly oppose any deregulation of businesses and relentlessly elect people who will keep the fire on billionaires by taxing and regulating them. One way or another, we need to overturn Citizens Union and put capitalism back in its place.#citizensunited #capitalism #fascism #antifa #antifascist @felinious_

The farmers market is love.I heard a mother tel The farmers market is love.I heard a mother telling her teenage daughters not to talk to anyone at the farmers market or pet any dogs because people use dogs to abduct children.Don't teach your daughters to be afraid of people. It actually makes them more vulnerable. Not only do predators home in on fear, but your kid might need a kind stranger someday and be too scared to speak to them. Instead, teach them assertiveness and common sense. Tell them never to leave an area with a stranger or get in their car. Make sure they know how to call 911. Send them into the world with the idea that most people are good. Teaching them to live in fear is not healthy.Teach your kids to have situational awareness so they can talk to strangers and pet dogs with the confidence that they know how to take care of themselves if the unexpected happens.Fear is one of the things that tears this country apart. Don't pass it on to your kids.#farmersmarket #selfconfidence❤️ #streetsmarts #fear #daughters
