GRATITUDE: USF St. Pete’s Enterprise CarShare

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreMarch 25, 2015Leave a comment

Today I am expressing gratitude for the Enterprise CarShare program at USF St. Pete. What a valuable service for the students and what a blessing that they share the program with the public. This program is similar to a car rental program, but you can rent the car by the day, overnight or just for a…

Feeling whiny? Try intentional deprivation.

MinimalismBy Elsie GilmoreMarch 6, 20151 Comment

We are living in a time when it is ridiculously easy to obtain things. Thanks to the internet, you can have almost anything shipped to you, including live animals, food-grade insects, teeth whitening solution, furniture, boats, and food. You can even send a glitter bomb to someone you hate. Taking our luxuries for granted When I…

We’re all in this together so don’t be a douche

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreMarch 4, 2015Leave a comment

WARNING: Rant with harsh language I just attended one of the most amazing musical performances I have ever witnessed. It was The Indigo Girls playing with a full orchestra on the stage of the Mahaffey Theater here in St. Petersburg, Florida. Every song was a dramatic journey from start to finish. It was enchanting, and I was…

Getting around the city with transportation apps

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreFebruary 27, 2015Leave a comment

When you don’t own a car, going somewhere requires a bit of thought. You have to ask yourself a series of questions. Should I walk there? Ride my bike? Is it raining out? How far away is my destination? How much money do I want to spend to get there? How much physical effort do…

Sick in the city (without a car)

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreFebruary 25, 2015Leave a comment

When you don’t own a car, getting sick can be a hassle. Your doctor might be several miles away, and you don’t want the expense of going to the ER (if that happens to be closer). Usually this means, you take a “wait and see” approach to most illnesses. While the average person might rush to…

17 Reasons Why Not Owning a Car is Amazeballs

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreFebruary 20, 20152 Comments

Here are some great reasons why not owning a car is amazing: 1. That car alarm that’s going off right now? Not mine. 2. No need to worry about endless loops around the block trying to find a parking space near my apartment. 3. No car payment. 4. No car insurance payment. 5. No time…

Taking the bus isn’t scary

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreFebruary 16, 20153 Comments

There is a phenomena in this country that baffles me. If you live in New York City, you take public transportation all the time. Mostly the subway, but also other trains, buses, taxis, etc. I’m guessing the main idea behind doing this is that it would take you longer to reach your destination and be…

Grocery shopping on your bike

Getting groceries without a car

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreFebruary 13, 20151 Comment

One of the questions I get asked most frequently when I tell folks I don’t own a car is, “How do you go grocery shopping?” When I answer, “On my bike,” they generally look at me quite skeptically. I don’t bother to tell them that I twice carried a watermelon home on my bike from…

Why you should charge what you’re worth

WorkBy Elsie GilmoreFebruary 11, 2015Leave a comment

Charging what you’re worth doesn’t just achieve the obvious goal of helping you make a decent living. It also helps your peers in similar professions. I moved to a new town a few years ago and followed the link on a website to find out who built it. It was a great looking website, and…

Today's escape from capitalism into nature. Not as Today's escape from capitalism into nature. Not as much wildlife as my other paddles, but we did see many pelicans and glimpses of a manatee.Take time to spend in nature. It's calming and grounds us. Nature is real life. Computers, smartphones, AI, and the stock market are things we made up. The world would be fine without them. Pelicans would still exist.#naturegirl🌻 #naturegirl #nature #gooutsideandplay #outdoorsgirl #outdoors #kayaking #kayakingadventures #paddling #kayaking #kayakadventures #fightcapitalism
The existence of billionaires and their level of c The existence of billionaires and their level of control over our lives and our government is detrimental to everyone on the planet. There are no good billionaires. They are all driven by profit motive above all else... otherwise they wouldn't be billionaires. We need to give billionaires less of our money, support small businesses when possible, and demand our government stop making laws for billionaires that hurt everyone else (because they take money away from programs for our working class and most vulnerable citizens). Why are billionaires allowed to pay starvation wages in the richest country in the world? Our government's priorities are messed up. We need to fight back.#capitalism #capitalismkills #defundbillionaires #billionaires
This is my cat's new catnip toy (made by @feliniou This is my cat's new catnip toy (made by @felinious_).Capitalism and fascism are directly related. When you let capitalism run out of control (like we have), fascism grows (like it has and is).We will never tame fascism until we tame capitalism. Period. It's not possible. We need to relentlessly oppose any deregulation of businesses and relentlessly elect people who will keep the fire on billionaires by taxing and regulating them. One way or another, we need to overturn Citizens Union and put capitalism back in its place.#citizensunited #capitalism #fascism #antifa #antifascist @felinious_

The farmers market is love.I heard a mother tel The farmers market is love.I heard a mother telling her teenage daughters not to talk to anyone at the farmers market or pet any dogs because people use dogs to abduct children.Don't teach your daughters to be afraid of people. It actually makes them more vulnerable. Not only do predators home in on fear, but your kid might need a kind stranger someday and be too scared to speak to them. Instead, teach them assertiveness and common sense. Tell them never to leave an area with a stranger or get in their car. Make sure they know how to call 911. Send them into the world with the idea that most people are good. Teaching them to live in fear is not healthy.Teach your kids to have situational awareness so they can talk to strangers and pet dogs with the confidence that they know how to take care of themselves if the unexpected happens.Fear is one of the things that tears this country apart. Don't pass it on to your kids.#farmersmarket #selfconfidence❤️ #streetsmarts #fear #daughters
