Anti-Capitalist Activism
Let’s face it, we created these billionaires with our need for 2-day shipping, access to a ton of products we definitely don’t need, and other “conveniences” that are bad for people and the planet. We can help strangle them by strangling our bad consumer behavior.
Boycott
There are SO MANY ways you can stop giving money to billionaires and instead give it to other, better businesses (preferably small ones).
Amazon. First, cancel your Prime membership. Another easy first step to stop shopping on Amazon is to find the manufacturer of the product you like and buy directly from their website. Many of them have their own subscription service if that’s something you use on Amazon. Plus, you can almost always find discount codes on websites like RetailMeNot. They have a browser extension that will check for discounts when you’re checking out.
Temu and Shein. Just don’t. There is no way to sell things that cheaply without incredible exploitation of workers and the environment.
Big Box Stores. If you must shop at these, buy from the local stores instead of having the item shipped. Otherwise, there will be nowhere left to shop where you live.
Get creative. New things aren’t the only things you can buy. There is an incredible amount of used stuff in the world that is in perfect condition and waiting for you to take it home from thrift shops, lawn sales, Facebook marketplace, or Craigslist listings.
Divest
Got any investments in Tesla or other billionaire-owned corporations? Maybe consider moving those to other green tech or investments that are better for the planet and society.
Sanction
Does your club, school, or business want to bring a billionaire to speak? Perhaps suggest someone better. There are millions of interesting, inspirational, and successful people who could use the exposure more than our over-exposed billionaires.
Join a Union
Does your job qualify you to join a union? What are you waiting for? Working-class Americans need to join together to gain power over greedy corporations.
Protest
Got some free time and a knack for hilarious political signs? Join a local protest and show solidarity with a movement. We have power in numbers. Some “protests” are really just rallies. Be sure to find out what you are protesting and why, to what extent you will be safe, and how to prepare yourself for the type of protest you’ll be engaging in. Except under extreme circumstances, try to join a movement led by an organization or trusted group. They will help you know what to bring and how to act.
Guerrilla Activism
Want to have fun, spread your message, and make people smile? Check out this book on guerrilla art that you can pair with your activism.
Messaging is a huge part of social movements. We must keep the pressure on capitalists and billionaires by reminding folks why they’re so bad.
