Billionaires have enormous control over our data, including very private information, photos, and financial data. Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook… they’re all tracking us so they can sell us more shit. (And now they may be tracking us for the government.)

We can move away from their services as much as possible to help protect ourselves.

Here are some viable alternatives to using services owned by billionaires.

Better email:

Web browsers that respect your security:

Instead of Google Drive:

Instead of Google Tasks:

Instead of Microsoft Office:

Instead of billionaire chatbots:

Instead of GoDaddy for domains:

Instead of big money hosting:

Instead of Amazon for books and ebooks:

  • Bookshop.org – supports local bookstores. This link goes to my selection of favorite books, but you can search for your own!
  • Haymarket Books – Lots of great anti-capitalist books, and you get your ebooks without any encryption.

How to decrypt your Amazon ebooks for use with any e-reader:

Where to buy used cell phones and other tech:

  • BackMarket – refurbished tech in excellent condition

Obviously, do your own research. Take advantage of free trials. And have fun experimenting with some new, kinder tech.
