Recurring themes in Prague
I have noticed several recurring themes in Prague that repeat themselves daily. First, brides. There are a ton of brides roaming around various parts of the city, followed by an entourage of photographers and videographers. Their dress dragging across the dirty cobblestone. We think that perhaps we are not seeing them on their wedding day but on a special outing to obtain these photographs. Sometimes the maid of honor and best man accompany them. It is nice to see that love (or at least the traditional wedding) is alive and well.
Next, tours. There are a million tours going on at any given time in Prague. You can tell a tour by the umbrella that the tour guide is holding up. There are day tours, night tours, bicycle tours, Seqway tours, horse-drawn carriage tours, a 7-person bicycle pub tour… you name it.
Third, buskers. Many a talented (and sometimes not) individual is standing in a square or on a street corner here trying to make a buck. There were 3-piece bands, one-man bands, opera singers, saxophone players, Chapman stick players, etc. I guess it beats the folks who prostrate themselves on the street with their hat outstretched in front of them. I’m not really sure what the schtick is with those people.
The last theme I noticed was unusual doors and door hardware. It’s like every door in this city was made to individual specifications without regard to any standards. It’s pretty neat to see the variety.
Jim and I have decided that being in this city feels like being in Disneyland. There is a castle near our apartment that looks like it belongs in the Magic Kingdom. The buildings are all different colors and elaborately decorated. It’s just so cheerful here, like there’s a nonstop festival going on.
