I have been consumed by the evil demon that is the common cold virus. It had been stalking me for 3-4 days, and then yesterday it landed on me like a ton of bricks. I slept all morning and ingested glass after glass of various teas, juices and potions. I didn’t really sleep last night, probably due to the Clariton D (a.k.a. crack) that I took shortly before bedtime, but I do feel better today. Not good, just better. I am positive that yesterday was the apex of the beast and today is the beginning of the ride back down to health.
I have been making a serious effort in the last two years to avoid heading to the doctor every time I get a cold. The problem is that they tend to manifest themselves in my sinuses, which screws up my head for working. I get impatient about not being able to function, so I go for the good old antibiotics. However, since I might really need antibiotics for something serious some day, I’m trying not to let my body become too accustomed to them. The last time I took them was because my cold turned into bronchitis. One thing people continually forget is that if they are eating any amount of factory-raised meat, they are almost certainly consuming massive quantities of antibiotics already.
Pair that with our tendency to run to the doctor for every little ache and pain, and you’ve got yourself a problem. Namely, it’s going to take higher and higher doses of antibiotics to rid your body of any virus because your immune system has gotten weaker.
Give your body a chance to fight off the virus first. You’ll be surprised. If you can’t fight off the common cold, perhaps you need to examine whether you’re getting enough vitamins and nutrients in your diet. Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier, we’re often impatient when going through cold virus hell. We’ve become a society that is too wimpy to tolerate even the mildest discomfort, so we try to find a pill or ointment for every little thing. Also, few of us take advantage of the vast array of homeopathic remedies that have been used for generations that won’t have the negative effects of most modern medicines.
My advice: fight it out. See what your body is made of.
