Permaculture Design Course Assessment

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 22, 2011Leave a comment

So, what did I really think of this permaculture design course? Well, as you could tell, it was very intensive. Honestly, I would’ve retained more info if it had been 8 hours a day, instead of 13. I was so tired at the end of every day simply from being “on” all day that the…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 17

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 17, 20112 Comments

There was a fair amount of excitement in the air this morning. We were all anxious to be going home but sad to be leaving each other. I woke up at my normal 6:00 a.m. but hit the snooze button so I could sleep in a bit. My night of sleep was not too bad…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 16

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 17, 2011Leave a comment

About every fourth night or so, I’m so exhausted that I actually get a decent night’s sleep.  Last night was that night, and I’m very thankful for that.  Today wasn’t too bad because we had field trips.  First, we went to SeQuential BioFuels, which is a gas station that sells solely bio-diesel and ethanol fuels. …

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 15

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 16, 20111 Comment

Today I did what I needed to do for me… I gave up.  I awoke from another night of barely sleeping and aching muscles and said, “That is enough.”  I did not come on this trip to punish myself.  I came here to learn, and I feel that my capacity to do that effectively has…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 14

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 15, 2011Leave a comment

The weather here is simply unbearable – it’s dreary and/or raining about 75% of the time.  My vitamin D levels must be ridiculously low.  We had a session this morning with the owner of the property we’re staying on.  He talked about permaculture in general, but I did not find him very engaging and was…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 13

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 14, 20111 Comment

Woke up this morning feeling MUCH better than yesterday and with the comforting knowledge that the course is over in 4 days and I can return to my home.  Unfortunately, today is also a cooking day for my team, so I woke up knowing I’d have little free time today.  My alarm went off at…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 12

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 14, 2011Leave a comment

You may notice that I skipped a day… Day 11 was just more of the same with nothing much of interest to report.  It was Larry’s last day of teaching, and we will miss him.  He’s an incredibly thoughtful individual and has a very “live and let live” attitude.  He spent a lot of time…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 10

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 11, 2011Leave a comment

What can I say about today?  Today felt like that day in medical school where they finally bring out the cadavers to see who’s really cut out for a career in medicine.  And by that I mean that we were taken to a very unappealing place where people practice permaculture.  Out of respect, I won’t…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 9

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 10, 2011Leave a comment

I am totally exhausted today.  The bags under my eyes are a delightful indication of how I will look 10 years from now. Today we broke into the groups in which we will do our projects.  My project group is doing a report on starting a permaculture design business.  The other group: designing a permaculture…

Adventures in Permaculture: Day 8

Urban LivingBy Elsie GilmoreApril 9, 2011Leave a comment

Well, I did sleep better last night with Shannon’s camp pad… I still ache quite a bit but in an entirely different way!  Ibuprofin was my friend this morning.  As promised, below is a photo of the women’s sleeping area.  What you see is the main area with two futons.  On the sides, in the…

No one is safe from the ravages of capitalism. We No one is safe from the ravages of capitalism. We are all just cogs that exist at the leisure of the billionaire class. When they decide we're not profitable, they toss us aside. We need to tax billionaires out of existence and bring back strong social safety nets. We need to vote for people who are not sending billions of dollars to Israel for NO DISCERNIBLE REASON. Did you know that Venezuela has had an embargo on sending oil to Israel, and one of the first things that happened after we attacked Venezuela is that their oil was suddenly on the way to Israel? We can't afford to prop up other countries while our working class sinks into poverty. We must fight back in any way possible against what is happening in our country. Tell your elected representatives that you won't vote for them if they support AI or sending billions to Israel.#taxbillionaires #anticapitalist #defundbillionaires

I don't think there is a clearer or more rage-indu I don't think there is a clearer or more rage-inducing indictment of capitalism than this book by @naomiaklein. I'm not even halfway through, and the pattern is pretty clear. Unfettered capitalism brings misery for most and insane wealth for a few.I would not normally pick up a 600-page nonfiction book, but a friend gave it to me before I knew. The good news is that it's written very well, which makes it a quick read. A warning, though, the entire first chapter is about torture... torture that our CIA paid a psychiatrist to test out on his patients and has since been used by governments around the world, including our own. What goes around comes around, which we are seeing right now in our own country. If surveillance and torture are used on others, and we do nothing, it will be used on us. Capitalism is a hungry beast, and the super wealthy are psychotic. We are next on their dinner plate.#capitalism #capitalismkills #shockdoctrine #shocktherapy #EatTheRich
Our country is going backward at warp speed, but i Our country is going backward at warp speed, but it's only getting "great again" for big corporations and billionaires. It's getting much, much worse for the rest of us.We must all do our part to fight against the many, many bad things being done to our country. Don't get overwhelmed... pick one thing and keep track of it. Contact your representatives. Protest when you can. Boycott billionaire owned companies. We are the only ones that can stop this.#environmentalist #pollution #epa #protestworks #capitalismkills
